The story
Mashiko ware comes from the town of Mashiko in Tochigi, north of Tokyo. Its kilns began in 1853, and the local clay is sturdy and earthy.
In the twentieth century the potter Hamada Shoji settled here, and the folk-craft (mingei) movement made Mashiko known for honest, everyday pottery with warm glazes.
