The story

Kairagi is a glaze texture rather than a place: the surface crawls and beads as the glaze pulls back in the fire, giving a rough surface often compared to the skin of a ray.

It is prized on tea bowls and sake cups because it feels as good in the hand as it looks, and because no two pieces crawl the same way.

What to look for

  • A rough, beaded surface
  • Glaze that pulls back to show the clay
  • A tactile feel in the hand
