The details

About this piece

Plates for sushi and sashimi are usually plain, flat or shallow forms that keep the fish in focus and let each piece sit apart. The glaze does the talking.

The material

Pottery is made from earthier clay than porcelain, with a warmer, more tactile body. The glaze pools and breaks over it, so you can see and feel the clay beneath.

Its character

Glazes and decoration vary slightly from piece to piece, so yours may differ a little from the photograph. That is part of how ceramics are made.

It belongs to the Shigaraki (信楽) tradition. See where it comes from.

Our story

The fire of stone

Ishi no KA means “the fire of stone”: the place where raw earth meets heat and becomes something lasting.

We choose each piece in Tokyo, working with kilns and workshops across Japan, and we keep their small natural variations, because imperfection is the mark of a human hand.
