Japanese Tableware for Restaurants: What a Ramen Shop, Sushi Bar or Izakaya Needs

Tableware is part of how a restaurant tastes. Guests see the bowl before they taste the soup. If you run a ramen shop, a sushi bar, an izakaya or a café with a Japanese menu, the right pieces help your food look the way you intend. Here is how to buy them well.

1. Decide what the menu needs

  • Ramen and noodle shop: deep, wide bowls that keep broth hot, plus spoons, chopsticks and small plates for side dishes.
  • Sushi bar: flat plates and long plates for nigiri and rolls, small dishes for soy sauce and ginger, and sake sets.
  • Izakaya: small plates for sharing, sake bottles and cups, and small bowls for sides.
  • Café or tea room: matcha bowls, teapots, cups and small dessert plates.

Write a list of every dish and what it is served in. Then choose a few shapes that cover many dishes, instead of a different piece for each one.

2. Consistency matters more than variety

Guests notice when pieces in the same service do not match. Choose designs that you can reorder in the future. Ask the seller whether the design will remain available, and how much natural variation to expect. Handmade glazes can differ slightly from piece to piece, which many restaurants like, but plan for it.

3. Think about durability

  • Choose walls that are thick enough for busy service and washing.
  • Check that rims are smooth and not too thin, because rims chip first.
  • Stackable shapes save space in a small kitchen.
  • Ask about care: some pieces are fine in a commercial dishwasher, others are not. Check each piece's care note.

Order a few extra pieces to cover breakage in the first months. It is much easier than waiting for a second shipment.

4. Test before you commit

You can order a single piece to see and hold it before a large order. Serve a real dish on it, wash it a few times, and see how it performs.

5. How ordering in quantity works with us

We offer volume discounts for larger orders: 10% for 30 pieces or more, 15% for 60 or more, and 20% for 100 or more. Discounts are applied automatically at checkout. For mixed orders, larger quantities or a custom quote, write to us and we will prepare it.

6. Plan the shipping

We choose each piece in Tokyo and ship from Tokyo, usually by EMS, and express by arrangement. Delivery time depends on the destination, and import duties and taxes apply in most countries. For restaurants, it is helpful to ask for a quote that includes shipping, so you can see the total cost for your location before you order.
